Vzpomínám na něj [Josefa Vlacha] jako na velkého přítele, jako na velkého muzikanta, který spojoval inteligenci s velkou citovou angažovaností a hlavně s úžasným smyslem pro zvuk, - já tomu říkám "zavalující espresívo". Nenechal žádnou melodii, aniž by ji nevyšperkoval a nevytáhl do jejího vrcholu. Vždycky jsem obdivoval Leopolda Stokowského pro zvuk jeho orchestru a myslím, že Vlach je jeho bratrem v ideálu velkého, živého vibráta a úžasné tónové modulace i v práci s orchestrem zejména ve zvuku. Pracovali jsme spolu průběžně i koncertovali na zájezdech; naštěstí existují nahrávky Mozartových koncertů, které s ním mám.

Vlach byla laskavost sama, nikdy nezvýšil hlas, což je kouzlo lídra orchestru, že nekřičí na své hráče. Byla to kombinace velkého obsahu jeho imaginace a autority hudební, ale také laskavosti a inteligence a velmi slušného přístupu k lidem. Tím to Vlach vyhrával. V ČKO měl celou řadu třeba i některých zlobivých filharmoniků, které ovládal svou laskavostí a svou absolutní přesvědčivostí, takže v ČKO panovala líbezná atmosféra. Naštěstí Vlach má své pokračovatele. Je to v prvé řadě jeho dcera, která je primáriem tohoto pokračujícího ČKO, a pan dirigent Kukal, který je žákem Vlachovým a zřejmě má podobnou vizi o tom, jak má hudba znít. A to je veliké štěstí, že jeho odkaz hudební a inteligenční žije dál v těchto jeho žácích.

Současný ČKO s dirigentem Ondřejem Kukalem na svém 3. abonentním koncertu pořádaném ve spolupráci s ČF 12. června 2003 ve Dvořákově síni bude mít tu čest doprovodit Ivana Moravce v Mozartově Klavírním koncertu č. 23 A dur, KV 488. Koncert je zároveň vzpomínkou na nedožité 80. narozeniny Josefa Vlacha (1923-1988).

I remember him [Josef Vlach] as a great friend, as a great musician who combined intelligence with great emotional commitment and, above all, he had a wonderful sense for sound - I call this "overwhelming espressivo". He never allowed a single melody to get past him without polishing it and bringing it to its peak. I always admired Leopold Stokowski for the sound he created in his orchestra and I think that Vlach was his soulmate in the quest for the ultimate: a great, living vibrato, incredible tonal modulation and his work with the orchestra, particularly its overall sound. We performed together fairly regularly over the years and went on various concert tours; fortunately, we still have the recordings of Mozart concertos I did with him.

Vlach was kindness itself, he never raised his voice; that's the magic of an orchestral leader, if he's able to keep his composure with his players. It was the combination of his fertile imagination and musical authority, but also his benevolence and intelligence, and his extremely civilised approach to people. That was Vlach's trump card. There were probably quite a few badly behaved people in the CKO, but he was able to keep them in check through his kindness and absolute conviction in what he was doing, so there was always a pleasant atmosphere in the orchestra. Fortunately, Vlach has his successors. First and foremost his daughter, the leader of this continuing CKO, and conductor Ondrej Kukal, who was a pupil of Vlach and clearly has a similar vision of how the music should sound. So it's providence that his musical and intellectual legacy lives on in his pupils.
