‘Black Sand’ based on mining bags Sahasrara Intl Film Festival Award

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 22 (UNI) Black Sand directed by Dr. Sohan Roy has won the Best International Documentary award at the Sahasrara International Film Festival (SIFF) aimed at promoting new talent in the global film industry. The prize included a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a citation and a sculpture, organizers said in a press release here on Tuesday. The director, Dr. Sohan Roy, received the award at a reception held at the AriesPlex Theater where the screening of the documentary based on Alappuzha sand mining was also held at the same time. The festival also aims to introduce the latest film technologies and trends to artists working in this field around the world. The documentary has won more than forty national and international awards and recognitions in just ten months. It also made the shortlist for Best Documentary at last year’s Oscars. Black Sand also won the ‘Nature Documentary’ award and garnered international attention. This was followed by a string of wins at the LAG D’Or International Art House Film Festival, Rajasthan Film Festival, Calcutta International Film Festival, Singapore World Film Carnival, Tagore International Film Festival, Nawada International Film Festival, at the Prague International Film Festival of the Czech Republic, Paris Film Festival, San Diego Movie Awards, Madras Independent Film Festival, Uruvatti International Film Festival, Hodu International Film Festival, Indo French International Film Festival and International Motion Picture Festival of India. The film was recently selected for the Bangalore International Film Festival. The documentary gives a true picture of the current deplorable state of life of the inhabitants of the Alappuzha sand mining area. The film details the history of mining, the timeline of its turmoil, its various political, economic and social perspectives, scientific analysis and practical ways to permanently resolve this problem. The documentary is produced by Abhini Sohan Roy. Harikumar did the research and the script and the background music is provided by renowned musical director Bijuram. Johnson Iringol handled the editing and Tinu Basil Paul handled the camera. Arun Sugathan and Lakshmi Atul are the executive producers. Mahesh, Bijin and Arun did the editing, coloring and graphics. The animations were created by Aries Epica. Released in English and Malayalam, the film is translated by Neha and Mrinalini.
